Copper Coated Highways

Monkey on her back

Monkey on her back
By AJ O’Brien.

Hope, a burning candle
In search of something
within a graying town,
came upon a man of old
dressed in golden brown.

Spike enters the moment
given a free trip
to no man’s land.
She had found hunger,
became one of the damned.

Within her veins
the killer whispered
of death and decay,
so hard she tried to stay alive
but could not pull away.

  1. Addiction is devastating, for both the addict and those who love them. Your words paint a vivid picture of the hopelessness many feel.

I hope you don’t take offense, but your writing style is reminiscent of a blogger I followed a few years ago. He quit using WordPress, and after some time had passed, so did I. I’ve just recently started blogging again, using a different name. Could the same be true for you? Again, I apologize if my comment seems off the wall….

    • Thank you very much, Kate.
I actually left WordPress over two years ago and have only just returned.
I must say you also remind me of a blogger I used to follow. Her name was Cathy Workman if I’m not mistaken.
If this is you Kate, what are the odds of us meeting up again soon?
My poem was only posted yesterday, but for some reason WordPress back dated it to the 14th.

      • Yes, it is me.
It’s so good to see you here again! It’s like running into a good friend I haven’t seen for a long time—and yes, what are the odds?? When I left, I had no intention of returning to WordPress, but here I am. 🤷‍♀️ I’m still settling in, trying to figure out my niche here. As of this moment, I’m concentrating on poetry (mostly, but not all, dark) and sharing some of my artwork. I think I’ve changed my site name three times already, the last being this morning. 🙄
As for your poem being backdated, I’ve found that if I save a draft of a post, but wait a day or more to publish, WordPress dates it the day I saved the draft. Don’t know why…
Again, it’s wonderful to see you. I’ve missed you and your poetry. 😊💕
One other thing—is it AJ or Alan here?

  2. I can’t blog right now, Alan. I just can’t stick with it…too much chaos here. I’m deleting everything.
But I know where to find you if I return sometime down the road.
    Take care, my friend.
    Kathy 💕
